Interesting thought

i was thinking this morning while reading about folks who choose not to believe in God. Truthfully I can't put myself in their mindset so i have a hard time understanding it. I know that there are very intellegent people who choose not to believe in God but how do they ultimately come to meaning in life? Are they ok with no meaning? These might not even be questions they have, are even consider...

As a christian what should our response be? How do we reach the ones that are not on a forum or blog posting the "nasty" things about the Faith but those who really don't care enough to give it the time of day..

that is a good question, something I do get asked a lot because I am an Atheist.
as for a general all purpose end all “meaning of life”, I don’t think there is one other than the basic (eat, sleep, multiply, etc). but I do find many meaningful things in life like as trying to be a good human to other living things. like for example, I’ll be good and friendly to my neighbors, I try to help out when and where I can (volunteer work), I try to educate (myself as well as others). I find it’s more important to help another, than to simply scoff and or be critical. although being critical is something we all do, I just TRY to limit it. contributing to the welfare of others in my opinion has in itself a lot of meaning.

Well, as a Christian who came to God late in life and after decades of questions and doubt and anger and fear, I can, somewhat, confidently say, it doesn’t matter one whit what you think wonder. I don’t mean to be cruel or offend you, it’s just that each of us billions of human beings live the lives we live and, if you so believe, God will find us where we are, period. So, if you have no words or very few, silence can be golden, if you are “moved” to say something, do so. Other than that, well, accept and live.

I tend not to be offended especially on blogs… I will say your response interest me in this, accept and live… If by silence you mean to accept what is happening without giving warnings or truth, well that is not advice I will take

No, I mean accept others do not believe as we do, accept them where they are and who they are, just as Jesus does us.

I guess the word accept is giving me pause… I agree with accepting them where they are but understanding that God does not leave anyone as they were once they know him…

Accept, understand they are who they and believe what they believe because, well, they do. Accept that. Now, God can and does change lives, we, on the other hand might, maybe, on a good day, but, not if we don’t accept that others are not us and may not have a clue or give a damn about what we say unless and until we accepts them for the person they are when we meet them.

It isn’t an interesting thought at all, simply because nobody ‘chooses’ what to believe or not believe. As for the meaning of life, it’s defined by the observer.

Why do you assume that there is no meaning to life without a god? What meaning does a belief in god give to life?

Your question is a good one but is flawed.. You ask why I need to believe, the flaw there is that I don’t need it to be meaningful. In all actuality if we were honest people would be a lot happier if what they did in this life had no meaning what so ever. However there is something in us that says that there is more to existence than just to exist. So the need you speak of is not mine or those of faith, it is everyone’s.

beezlebob, life IS meaningful, if nothing more than meaningful for a moment. christiananswers isn’t pretending or playing make-believe, she worries in her own beliefs. Allow that, as we all, even you, have……….questions in life.
